Two nights on a business trip to Beijing
I came to Beijing this time for a semi closed seminar in the industry. When booking, my colleague recommended Jianguo Qianmen Beijing Hotel, saying that it is located in the Second Ring Road, which is convenient for meeting clients and going to the venue. After landing at Beijing Station, I took a taxi for twenty minutes and arrived at No. 175 Yong'an Road in Xicheng District. The check-in process was very smooth, the front desk is on duty 24 hours a day, and supports electronic ID cards, which is very friendly for someone like me who often forgets to bring their documents. I am staying in a business king room on the executive floor, and as soon as I enter, I can smell a faint smell of disinfectant, which is a signal of meeting hygiene standards. The decoration style of the room is a typical old school Chinese style, with dark solid wood furniture, hanging paintings with elements of Beijing opera masks, and cloisonn é lamps. Although the hardware shows signs of time, such as slightly worn skirting boards in the corners, they are maintained quite cleanly. This time when I went to Beijing, I specifically didn't choose those generic business chains, but booked the Jianguo Qianmen Beijing Hotel at 175 Yong'an Road, Xicheng District. It is one of the famous "Eight Great Hotels" in Beijing, opened in 1956, and was selected for the "Beijing Excellent Modern and Contemporary Architecture Protection List" in 2007. It is also one of the few Beijing Opera culture themed hotels in the capital. It only takes ten minutes to take a taxi from the station. As soon as the car turned onto Yong'an Road, the building with a strong sense of the last century and a steady and heavy atmosphere came into view - without exaggerated glass curtain walls, but with a dignified aura of an old style state hotel.
Lobby and guest rooms - the perfect blend of time and refinement
Pushing open the revolving door, the tall lobby is paved with dazzling marble, with lush tropical plants on both sides. The vermilion pear garden theater entrance is adjacent to the lobby bar, instantly drawing people into an atmosphere of "old Beijing meets old Europe". The front desk check-in was neat and enthusiastic, and they also took the initiative to introduce the hotel's features.
I live in an executive king size bed room with warm toned Chinese decoration, solid wood furniture, cloisonn é table lamps, and hand drawn maps of Beijing at the bedside. Every detail is meticulously crafted. The room covers an area of approximately 30 square meters and is equipped with central air conditioning, a mini bar, satellite TV, a hair dryer, and bathrobes. The bedding is fluffy and white, ensuring a quiet night's sleep. The bathroom is an old five-star common bathtub+shower integrated design. The ceramic tile has a slight age trace but does not affect the use. The water temperature is awesome - if you mind, you can bring your own disposable bath bag. Outside the window, you can see the gray tiled roofs of the alley, and in the morning light, you can hear the faint whistle of pigeons, which is very "southern".
Pear Garden Theater - The Most Stunning Night
What really made me feel that this stay was worth it was at the Pear Garden Theater at night. It is located on the first floor of the hotel and is the first tea house style Peking Opera theater in Beijing jointly organized by Qianmen Jianguo Hotel and Beijing Peking Opera Theatre in 1990. It has been awarded the Best Evening Event Venue of Beijing Tourism "Purple Forbidden Cup" for many consecutive years.
I deliberately entered half an hour early and leaned over to the side of the stage to watch the actors hook their faces, tie their heads, and dress up - with oil paint strokes, ordinary faces turned into tyrants or heavenly maidens in an instant, and this process was even more fascinating than the play itself. Take a seat at the Eight Immortals' Table, order a pot of tea with a covered bowl, Lvdagur (Glutinous Rice Rolls with Sweet Bean Flour) and Ai Wowo. At 19:30, the gong and drum sounded, and the three forks, Tiannv Scattered Flowers and other eclectics were staged in turn. Singing, reading, doing and fighting real kung fu, and there were Chinese and English subtitles on both sides, so there was no need to worry about not understanding. Half of the foreign tourists were seated in the audience, and the performance ended with thunderous applause - no wonder people say that when you come to Beijing, you have to "climb the Great Wall, eat roast duck, and watch Beijing Opera". The next morning, we had a buffet breakfast in the Lanfang Hall of the hotel, which was a combination of Chinese and Western styles - freshly fried eggs, freshly cooked noodles, toasted toast, and an old Beijing yogurt maker were all available, with a wide variety of options to satisfy our appetite. For dinner, I tried the Qianmen roast duck from Lanfang Hall, which was sliced on site and had crispy skin and tender meat. It was paired with Huaiyang and Beijing style hot dishes, and the quality was excellent.
Location also adds points: Walk about 500 meters to Hufangqiao Station on Metro Line 7, take a 10 minute drive to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, and stroll to Dashilan, Liulichang Ancient Culture Street, and Ji Xiaolan's former residence. The surrounding area is crowded with braised dishes, fried cakes, and old brand snacks. If you want to explore the hutongs, feel free to leave anytime.
